Water Treatment Plant

The City of Amsterdam receives its' water supply from three impounding reservoirs at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Saratoga County. Total capacity is 2.4 billion gallons servicing a community of 21,700 people with a safe yield of 10 million gallons per day. Currently, the system's water demand is 5 million gallons per day. Upon entering a 24" pipe, the water is screened, metered and disinfected with chlorine dioxide. The raw water then travels through 18 miles of pipe to the City of Amsterdam.

The City of Amsterdam owns a Direct Filtration Plant and operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. We are professionally staffed with a Chief Plant Operator, Senior Plant Operator, Lab Director and, six Operators. All Plant Operators are licensed with the New York State Department of Health. The water quality is monitored every four hours by properly trained personnel as we strive to be, and have been, in compliance with all State and Federal water regulations.

Amsterdam is fortunate to have an abundant water supply, which can be expanded, as the City and development grows. The City also takes pride in its' greatest asset by undergoing water system improvements as needed. Most recently, a 4 million gallon water storage tank has been constructed to increase our storage capacity to 12 million gallons of treated water and a hydro-mechanical pumping system has been added to make our system more energy efficient.

Consumer Confidence Report for the City of Amsterdam Water Users

Last year the City of Amsterdam analyzed 78,840 samples which included both physical and bacteriological analysis and 600 samples sent to private labs for Organic, Inorganic, Lead and Copper. All sampling is mandated by State and Federal regulations. The Amsterdam Water Treatment Plant is proud to not have exceeded the limit the New York State Department of Health allows. This report is a picture of quality of water we provided last year.
