Fire Department
The Amsterdam Fire Department has been a fully career department for 100 years. The department consists of 37 sworn members providing emergency response 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The duties of the department include fire suppression, fire education, enforcement of State and City codes, Advanced Life Support emergency medical services, heavy rescue response, water response, etc. The area protected includes residential, commercial, mixed occupancy, seven schools, industrial sites, two hospitals, waterway, railroad and roadway, including a section of the NYS Thruway.Department apparatus include three Class A pumpers, two quints (85' elevating aerial platform with pump, and 75' heavy-duty ladder with pump), one utility truck and a chief's car. All responses are made from Fire Department Headquarters, located in the Public Safety Building. Current ISO rating is a 4.
The department has 17 members certified as EMT-D, 5 members certified as EMT-I and 6 EMT-Paramedics. A new rescue/pumper has recently been placed in service for all EMS and rescue responses.
Fire safety education classes and demonstrations are provided to school children, senior citizens, industrial and commercial employees and civic groups. Smoke detectors are made available and installed by department members to all that request them.
Code enforcement duties include enforcement of the NYS Fire Prevention and Building Code, fire safety inspections of all commercial and industrial buildings, multiple dwelling inspections on a scheduled basis, and inspections of residential buildings as requested.
In addition, the Bureau of Housing Code Enforcement employs two non-uniformed members who respond to complaints regarding housing safety and maintenance.
The members of the department are highly trained and motivated to provide a safe environment to all the citizens of our City.
